A journey of body and soul on roads less traveled, the ultimate long distance cycling adventure in East Africa. Pedal for Purpose East Africa 2017 will be a journey undertaken by the two founders of the Pedal for Purpose Project. The two young ladies will cycle the entire route from Kenya through to Cape Town!  Cycle participants will be invited to connect with them on different legs of the journey! Sponsors will be invited to follow their journey!

More like sisters than cousins, Emma and Lysianne would constantly be looking for the next adventure they could find! Flash forward 20 plus years and they found themselves on opposite sides of the world. Little did they know their minds were still working in synchronicity and the universe was conspiring to make magic happen.

Unbeknownst to Lysianne, Emma had decided to grab a bicycle and cycle Zanzibar. Meanwhile, Lysianne had arrangements underway to cycle South Korea. Emma felt the urge to get in touch with Lysianne and broach the idea of the journey. Lysianne replied, “we are on the same page!”

The more people they shared the idea with, the more people wanted to bring the project to life. This led to our mission to collaborate with charities and connect with locals to encourage sustainable change.

You know when you are on the right path when everything just naturally falls into place

  • Join our cause

Join us as we begin our mission in Kenya. We will be cycling across the country picking support from the locals and riding on to our second location…

  • Of epic proportions

Our second leg takes us from Kenya into Tanzania, from the backdrop of Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa to the Tanzanian landmark of Kilimanjaro.

  • Blazing a trail

The third leg of our journey takes us into the heart of Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa. Malawi is defined by its topography of highlands split by the Great Rift Valley and enormous Lake Malawi.

  • Passing the legendary ‘Falls’

Our fourth leg leads us out of Malawi and into the land of Zambia, another of Africa’s landlocked countries, of rugged terrain and diverse wildlife, with many parks and safari areas.

  • And across the Kalaihari

The fifth stage see us enter Botswana, a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Botswana has a landscape defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, which becomes a lush animal habitat during the seasonal floods.

  • Battling through diversity

Namibia, is in southwest Africa and is our sixth destination. It is distinguished by the Namib Desert along its Atlantic Ocean coast. The country is home to diverse wildlife, including a significant cheetah population.

  • In a bid to shine for all

Our final leg sees us enter South Africa, a vast country on the southernmost tip of the African continent, marked by several distinct ecosystems.

Starting in  March 2017 from The Lamu Yoga Festival, passing through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa.

Every step of the journey will be documented, a live v-blog will be broadcast and update from the girls will be available on the website.

If you believe in the magic you will see the magic

The Pedal for Purpose vision is to promote clean, sustainable transportation and renewable energy, connect with locals through the sharing of skills, and support community projects with the funds raised.

Their mission is to cycle over 4,000 miles through seven countries in East Africa, deliver Solar Aid powered lanterns to as many educational and health institutes and collaborate with chosen charities in each country they cycle through.

Pedal for Purpose is working in partnership with nine charities with the intention to boost awareness and growth to their projects. Each charity will be supporting Pedal for Purpose along the journey.

598 million people in Africa alone have no access to electricity. Without electricity families have no clean source of light, leaving millions to rely on expensive and dangerous alternatives such as homemade kerosene lamps. These lamps are a poor source of light; they emit toxic black smoke, eat up to 15% of a family’s income and are extremely hazardous.

With a solar light, everything changes. These little lamps are safe, clean and affordable. They give off hours of light in the evening so families can earn, learn and feel safe after dark. Just one lamp can transform the fortunes of an entire family and is the first step on an energy ladder to full electrification.
